Tristate healthcare systems, a privately owned hospital located in Lagos, has purportedly conducted the first minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Nigeria.
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery entails the creation of small incisions within the thoracic region.
In contrast to conventional open-heart surgery, the surgeon employs a technique that involves accessing the heart by navigating between the ribs, so avoiding the need to incise the breastbone.
This particular cardiac surgical procedure frequently results in reduced pain and expedited recuperation for the majority of individuals.
According to reports, surgeons at Tristate hospital conducted off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve replacement procedures on four patients, without the need for cardiac arrest.
One of the individuals under medical care was an octogenarian female patient requiring a valve replacement procedure.
During an interview with Channels Television, a distinguished cardiologist and professor of medicine, Kamal Adeleke, stated that Tristate Healthcare had successfully performed more than 120 conventional open heart surgeries across the country.
Prior to the latest accomplishment, he claimed that Nigerians could only receive life-saving minimally invasive cardiac procedures in the West, India, and South Africa.
“Now, we’re using techniques that have never been done in Nigeria. The first one is the minimally invasive heart surgery,” he said.
“Apart from the fact that it is minimally invasive, we also did not stop the heart. The heart was beating while the blood vessels were bypassed.
“As a Nigerian that loves Nigeria, you can’t be happier that Nigeria can really do this.
“Nigeria can come out of a mess. When Nigeria puts its mind to something, it becomes doable.”
