British singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran has announced that his wife Cherry was diagnosed with a tumor while she was carrying their second child.
In light of Cherry’s tumor diagnosis, which she couldn’t have been treated for until after she gave birth, Ed Sheeran said that this reason made he and his partner keep the pregnancy a secret because they were plagued with of “fear, depression, and anxiety.”
The 31-year-old musician revealed that he had mental health challenges in 2022 as he dealt with his wife’s medical troubles and mourned the passing of his best friend, Jamal Edwards.
Edwards, a music producer, was the son of Loose Women actress, Brenda Edwards, who passed away in February 2022 following a heart arrest spurred on by cocaine and alcohol use.
“I had been working on Subtract for a decade, attempting to create the ideal acoustic album, composing and recording hundreds of songs with a strong idea of what I felt it should be.
“Then, at the beginning of 2022, a series of things happened that altered my life, my mental health, and eventually how I perceived art and music.
“I use songwriting as therapy. It enables me to understand my emotions. I just penned whatever came to me without considering what the music would be. And, in just over a week, deep dark thoughts had replaced a decades worth of work”
He added that it was within a month, that his pregnant wife learned she had a tumor, and there would be no way to begin therapy until after the baby was born.
“After the tragic death of my best friend Jamal, who I considered a brother, I found myself in court, defending my honesty and my career as a composer.
“I was in a downward spiral of anxiety, depression, and terror. When my head was below the water’s surface and I tried to glance up for air but couldn’t get through, it seemed like I was drowning.
Ed Sheeran claimed that as an artist, he didn’t feel like he could genuinely release a body of work that didn’t authentically reflect where he and how he needed to express himself at that point of his life.
