Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents to remain calm following the political crisis that led to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
According to The PUNCH, Fubara reassured the people of his commitment to peace and constitutional governance.
“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm, as we navigate this unfortunate moment in our state’s political history,” he stated. “Since assuming office, we have prioritized the protection of lives and property and ensured the continuous progress of our dear state.”
Fubara emphasized that despite the political turmoil, his administration has upheld constitutional order and the rule of law.
He noted that following President Tinubu’s intervention to mediate the crisis, his government implemented the agreed terms, including reinstating commissioners who had resigned.
“Furthermore, we moved swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment immediately after receiving the certified true copy, all in an effort to restore normalcy,” he said.
He accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of frustrating peace efforts, making governance more challenging. However, he assured that despite political disagreements, the state remained secure, salaries were being paid, and developmental projects continued.
“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding,” he added. “We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive.”
President Tinubu, in a nationwide address on Tuesday, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing ongoing political instability.
“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months,” Tinubu announced.
He appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state administrator to oversee governance during the emergency period.
