A jailbreak occurred at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, on Monday morning, leading to the escape of twelve inmates.
Security agencies have since re-arrested one of the fugitives while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others.
According to Channels, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the escape as a “serious security breach” and assured the public that authorities are taking necessary measures to prevent a recurrence.
“The theory that the inmates managed to escape through the tower without causing any structural damage is quite troubling. This incident requires a thorough investigation to uncover the exact circumstances of the breakout, track down the remaining fugitives, and identify any possible internal sabotage,” Fanwo stated.
He added that Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to tighten security at correctional facilities across the state.
“We urge members of the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone caught providing shelter to an escaped inmate will face the full weight of the law,” Fanwo warned.
Despite the incident, he reassured residents that there is no cause for panic. “People should go about their daily activities as usual, knowing that the security of lives and property remains a top priority for the government,” he said.
