At least 11 people were killed and 13 others injured when a bus collided with a crowd of students and parents outside a school in Tai’an city, Shandong province, eastern China, on Tuesday morning.
According to police and state media, the accident occurred around 7 a.m. as the students were waiting to enter the middle school gate.
The bus, which was specially customized for transporting students, “lost control” when it entered an intersection, as reported by the public security bureau in Dongping county.
The tragedy resulted in the deaths of five students and six parents. Among the injured, one person is in critical condition, while the others are reported to be stable.
The bus driver has been taken into police custody, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
China has recently seen a series of attacks and accidents involving schoolchildren.
In March, a car crashed into a group of pupils in Dezhou, Shandong, killing two and severely injuring six others.
Later that month, a bus carrying students collided with a dump truck in Nantong, Jiangsu province, resulting in one death and eight injuries.
Previously, there were fatal incidents involving stabbings outside schools; six people were killed and one injured in an attack outside a kindergarten in Guangdong province in 2023, and a 2022 stabbing at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province resulted in three deaths and six injuries.
