The Federal Fire Service has disclosed that in 2024, Nigeria witnessed the tragic loss of 100 lives and properties valued at N67.1 billion due to fire outbreaks.
During a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Abdulganiyu Jaji, shared that the service had successfully prevented the destruction of assets worth N1.94 trillion and saved 30,890 lives in the same period.
Jaji explained, “In the year 2024, Federal Fire Service successfully saved property worth N1.94tn and recorded an estimated property loss of N67.1bn.
In the same year, Federal Fire Service responded to fire and other emergencies during which 30,890 lives were saved while 23 lives were lost.
” As fellow Nigerians, we share in this grief and commiserate with the bereaved families and their loved ones,” Jaji said.
He linked many of these incidents to negligence and a failure to comply with safety regulations, urging citizens to exercise increased caution during the harmattan period, as the risk of fires is heightened at this time.
Jaji also urged operators of fuel stations, gas refilling plants, and those using gas cylinders to strictly adhere to safety measures in order to avert preventable disasters.
He further cautioned, “Currently, we are in the harmattan season when humidity is low and the risk of static spark or gas explosion can spread rapidly. Fire is a delicate and dynamic force that requires us to be more cautious and vigilant. At this point, I implore all operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling station, gas cylinders consumers and the general public to follow safety protocols and regulations.”
Looking ahead to 2025, Jaji reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to enhancing public safety, improving response times, and utilizing advanced technologies.
He stated, “As we begin year 2025, our focus, remains steadfast on ensuring public safety, and improving our commitment to saving lives, property and the environment.”
