President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhassan Yahaya on his election as President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State, on November 27, 2024.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Yahaya’s election as a strong endorsement of his leadership abilities by NUJ members nationwide.
“Yahaya’s decisive victory reflects the trust and confidence members of the Union have in his capacity to lead effectively,” Onanuga quoted Tinubu as saying.
The President expressed optimism in Yahaya’s ability to lead the journalism profession, citing his experience as the Union’s former Deputy President.
“His background as Deputy President of the NUJ equips him with the expertise needed to guide the Fourth Estate of the Realm during his tenure,” the statement added.
Tinubu urged the newly elected NUJ leadership to uphold high ethical standards in journalism while fostering a collaborative relationship with the government.
“This administration expects Yahaya’s tenure to strengthen journalism ethics and encourage constructive engagement with the government to promote justice and equity in our society,” Tinubu remarked.
He also extended congratulations to other members of the newly elected NUJ executive and commended the Union for organising a peaceful and transparent election.
Acknowledging the critical role of the media in national development, the President called on journalists to approach their responsibilities with renewed patriotism.
“Journalists should align their work with the ideals of Nigeria’s founding media pioneers, ensuring that their contributions to national development are both impactful and ethical,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu further urged the new NUJ leadership to address unethical practices within the media industry, emphasizing that a free and independent press is crucial to strengthening democracy.
“A vibrant and ethical media is essential for deepening democracy and fostering progress,” he concluded.
