Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of a Mexican immigration agent who was discovered lifeless on Monday in Juarez, a city on the US-Mexico border.
State security and migration officials reported that the incident occurred earlier in the day when the agent approached a group of migrants at a checkpoint.
According to the national migration institute (INM), the agent was “assaulted by a group of foreigners when he asked them for their identification documents.”
The attack, which happened at approximately 12:30 pm local time, resulted in fatal injuries.
State investigators revealed that the agent suffered a head injury and his body bore “signs of violence.”
Authorities confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the crime. Among the suspects, one was identified as a Colombian national, while the other two were from Venezuela.
This tragic incident comes as tensions surrounding immigration remain high, less than a month before the inauguration of US president-elect Donald Trump.
Trump, who has repeatedly described border crossings as an “invasion,” has vowed to enforce strict anti-immigration policies, including mass deportations, raising anxiety among migrants gathering at the border.
