The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions in preparation for the inaugural edition of the 10-kilometer Capital City Race, set to take place on Saturday, November 23.
In a statement issued on Friday, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, outlined the traffic arrangements.
The statement, signed by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Bolanle Ogunlola, specified that the race would occur between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m., during which key routes would be partially or fully closed to vehicular traffic.
Osiyemi pointed out that the race will begin at Shoprite Alausa, Ikeja, and proceed along a route that includes Billings Way, Kudirat Abiola Way, Opebi Link Bridge, and Allen Avenue.
“To this end, the following route, starting from Shoprite Alausa Ikeja inwards Billings Way to Kudirat Abiola Way, Opebi Link Bridge, Opebi Glo Tower inward Allen Avenue, Allen Junction, will be partially closed to vehicular movement,” he said.
Additional closures will affect routes such as the GTBank junction on Adeniyi Jones, the AP Filling Station area on Oba Akran Avenue, and the stretch from Samsung Authorized Service Centre to the Police College Sports Secretariat and Gym.
“Consequently, all junctions and intersections from Shoprite Alausa Ikeja to the destination (Police College Sports Secretariat/Gym) will be blocked,” Osiyemi added.
To ensure compliance and smooth traffic management, barriers will be installed and monitored by officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Nigerian Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps.
These agencies will enforce access restrictions along the designated race corridor.
Motorists were urged to cooperate and exhibit patience during the event. “The barriers will be manned by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps to prevent other road users access to the main race corridor,” the commissioner noted.
While acknowledging the temporary inconvenience, Osiyemi assured road users that affected junctions would be intermittently opened to ease traffic flow as the race advances.
The 10-kilometer Capital City Race is expected to attract participants from across the state and beyond, marking a significant milestone in promoting fitness and community engagement in Lagos.
