Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, has been released from detention by the Nigerian Army after spending three days in custody.
The journalist was reportedly detained by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on allegations of involvement in illegal oil bunkering.
However, FIJ refuted the claims, describing them as a deliberate misrepresentation of events.
In a statement on Friday, FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s release, attributing it to widespread media advocacy.
“We can confirm that our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, has been released by the Nigerian Army, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” the organization stated.
The military had earlier alleged that Soyombo was apprehended at an illegal oil bunkering site. In response, FIJ vowed to address the Army’s claim, asserting that their founder’s safety remains a top priority.
“Our immediate concern is the safety of Fisayo Soyombo, given the extensive information shared with the Army about his fieldwork during his detention,” FIJ added.
“We are assessing the situation to ensure his safety is not compromised following his release.”
