Dejan Kulusevski salvaged a point for Tottenham in a thrilling 1-1 draw against Rangers in the Europa League, marking Ange Postecoglou’s return to Glasgow.
The former Celtic boss came to Ibrox with a side struggling with injuries and poor form, and while they were far from convincing, they managed to avoid defeat, extending their winless streak to five matches.
Postecoglou made a crucial substitution at half-time, bringing Kulusevski on, and the winger responded by curling a shot into the bottom right corner following a well-executed move, keeping Spurs’ hopes of automatic qualification alive.
However, they still needed a remarkable late save from Fraser Forster to prevent Cyriel Dessers from scoring the winner.
Rangers had taken the lead early in the second half when Hamza Igamane finished off a precise pass from James Tavernier, beating the Tottenham defence just two minutes after the break.
Dessers thought he had put Rangers ahead again late in the match, but his goal was ruled offside.
The hosts deserved their lead, having dominated the first half. Forster had to tip over Nedim Bajrami’s shot and also produced two crucial saves to deny Vaclav Cerny.
In contrast, Tottenham had only one shot on target in the opening period – a tame effort from close range, with Timo Werner still struggling in front of goal, while Jack Butland pulled off an excellent save to deny Brennan Johnson from point-blank range.
Rangers suffered an injury blow when John Souttar was forced off in the 35th minute, but they will head into Sunday’s League Cup final against Celtic with confidence, having put in another solid performance.
